It was the PERFECT Morning for a Spring Turkey Hunt - By Tina Richard
Thursday, May 07, 2009
My husband Jerome and I decided Sunday night to go turkey hunting the first day even though we had not done a lot of scouting like in the past years. We went out the night before and saw turkeys where we had permission to hunt but there were several other folks out scouting as well so we did not wait around to watch the turkeys roost. We were planning on going out at the end of the week so the crowds would not be an issue. I was hesitant of not knowing where the birds had roosted but we were going off past experience to help us.

We got up at 3:00am, got dressed and rode down the road to an old airport which has been a great place for us because we have gotten turkeys from there the last four years. It was a beautiful 45 degrees early morning and no wind or moonlight which was great because we had to walk a very long field to stay away from the tall pines where the turkeys usually roosted. We even bumped into a skunk in the dark, but he left us alone. Jerome found us a great place to set up in the dark that he used last year in the crater of an old blown down tree. The crater was big enough for two people and the top made a great gun rest for both of us.

Jerome set up only one hen decoy covered with real turkey feathers with some fishing line to make the decoy move. He had his set-up complete around 3:50am. I was going to take a snooze but the toms started gobbling at 4:00am so I was fully awake and alert. They were so close I asked Jerome if we got busted walking in and he said no. Jerome started doing some light tree yelps which keep the turkeys gobbling even more. As it got closer to legal hunting time Jerome started getting aggressive with some raspy hen yelping which drove the toms crazy gobbling on the roost. Jerome watched them as they finally flew down off the roost and into the field off to our right about 150 yards away. At 5:25am I poked my head up and I saw three toms come running in a half strut with no hens. The toms were quite excited when they spotted the decoy. Jerome said wait until they come closer and when they were 40 yards I shot the middle turkey and Jerome shot the last one.

Both toms weighed 16 lbs. with 9 ½ inch beards and ¾ inch spurs, we teased each other that we shot the twins. The great thing about the hunt we both shot at the same time and both toms went down right where they stood. In the past we were opposite seasons from one another but he took me out to do the calling so I could be successful. This time he did the calling and we both was able to get a turkey because the split season was eliminated. We had our hunt done by 5:30am so Jerome was still able to get to work on time. The best part of the whole day was we had a BEAUTIFUL sunrise and the day ended with gorgeous sunset, we had the perfect day!!!
